Why Electrolytes Are Important

Electrolytes are minerals in your body including sodium, potassium, magnesium, chloride, calcium and phosphate. These minerals work to provide many functions in the body including pH balance, water balance, moving nutrients into your cells and waste out of cells and even keeping organs such as your brain and heart working properly! (1) The balance of electrolytes can become too high or too low depending on things like over-hydration, dehydration, extensive exercise, sickness, labor, nursing, medication, etc.
